Sustainable Tourism
One of the great achievements of ecotourism is that it has paved the way for sustainable tourism. Ecotourism is often associated with small groups and an educational experience, but this type of tourism only represents a very small market niche.

The sustainable tourism movement emphasises that all tourism should strive to be sustainable, including mass tourism destinations and mega-resorts.

In Brazil, the move to sustainable tourism builds on the ecotourism experience and the challenge now is to change the paradigm in all tourism practices.

Some interesting initiatives are :

Brazil Sustainable Tourism Certification Program (PCTS)
Coordinated by the Instituto de Hospitalidade, the program aims to improve the quality and competitive position of Small and Medium Tourism Enterprises, by improving their operational, environmental, sócio-cultural and economic performance. The program receives financial support from the Inter American Development Bank, APEX-Brasil, the Brazilian Export Promotion Agency and Brazilian Council for Sustainable Tourism (see below). The program sees certification as a means to an end and places great emphasis on stakeholder participation, disseminating information, training, creating consumer awareness and international promotion.

Brazilian Council for Sustainable Tourism (CBTS)
Founded in 2002, the Council's objective is to develop, implement, coordinate, disseminate and promote a unified system of voluntary certification of sustainable tourism in Brazil, in order to contribute to sustainable development, conservation, appropriate use of historic, cultural and natural heritage of the tourism destinations of Brazil. The CBTS is a partner in the PCTS (see above)

Roteiros de Charme
A group of independent hotels that seek to charm you by their privileged location (usually in natural and/or historic sites), quality service and tasteful decoration. The hotels also have adopted a environmental code of conduct
